The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) has been officially recognised as an Institute of National Eminence by the Income Tax Department, Ministry of Finance, on March 27, 2025. This designation grants 100 per cent tax exemption under Section 80G of the Income-tax Act, 1961, on donations made to the institute.
Previously, donations to IITH were eligible for 50% tax exemption, but with this new status, donors can now avail of a full tax deduction. This is expected to significantly boost philanthropic contributions, enabling IITH to accelerate advancements in academic excellence, research, technological innovation, and infrastructure development.
Additionally, this recognition underscores IITH’s growing stature as a leader in science, technology, and innovation and highlights its commitment to fostering groundbreaking research and development.
Prof. B. S. Murty, Director of IITH, expressed gratitude for this milestone, stating: “We welcome philanthropists, corporate partners, and well-wishers to support our mission of driving transformative education, pioneering research, and fostering indigenous technology development. This is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to innovation and societal progress as we move towards Viksit Bharat.”
Prof. Mahendrakumar Madhavan, Dean (ACR), added: “Giving is a fulfilling experience, especially when it serves a noble cause that benefits society. With 100% tax exemption on donations, contributing to IIT Hyderabad now carries even greater impact, strengthening our research and development efforts and reinforcing IITH as a knowledge hub of the nation.”
In the 2024 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings, the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) was ranked 8th in the engineering category and 12th in the overall category.
