Established in 2009, the Indian Institute of Technology Indore is one of the eight new IITs set up by the Ministry of Education. Initially, the institute operated from a temporary campus at the Institute of Engineering and Technology of Devi Ahilya University, under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. The foundation stone for the permanent campus was laid by Arjun Singh, the then Union HRD Minister, on February 17, 2009.
In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), released by the Ministry of Education, IIT Indore was ranked 33rd in the overall category, with 16th spot in engineering, 27th place in research and 8th in management.

Here are the NIRF rankings for the Indore-based Institute in the last five years.

The above table indicates that over the past five years, IIT Indore’s performance in the NIRF rankings has seen notable fluctuations. In the overall category, the institute was ranked 23rd in 2020 but witnessed a drop to 30th in 2021. While there was a slight improvement to 28th in 2023, the ranking further declined to 33rd in 2024, marking its lowest position in five years.
In the engineering category, IIT Indore has remained relatively stable, consistently ranking within the top 20. Its best performance was 10th in 2020, and despite slight fluctuations, it stood at 16th in both 2022 and 2024.
In the research category, introduced post-2020, shows a mixed trend. The institute maintained a steady 26th rank in 2021 and 2022, improved to 21st in 2023, but then fell to 27th in 2024, on the other hand under the management education, IIT Indore has performed consistently well, maintaining a spot in the top 10 nationwide throughout the five years—ranging from 6th to 8th place.

IIT Indore also provides various scholarships from both national and trust funds. The Institute also provides a national fellowship and scholarship for higher education of scheduled tribal students. The objective of the scheme is to provide financial assistance to deserving ST students to enable them to pursue higher education after completing a post-graduate degree. The candidates should have a minimum of 55 per cent marks at the final examination/grading at the PG level.
