The US Department of State (DOS) has been cracking down on students for political engagement, with some even having their visas canceled for actions as minor as liking a social media post. This new wave of scrutiny, initiated as part of an AI-driven initiative, raises serious concerns about the impact on student life and freedom of expression.
The shift in US immigration policy, known as the “Catch and Revoke” initiative, is actively targeting foreign students suspected of supporting organizations like Hamas. As reported by Axios, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that over 300 students had their visas revoked under this program within three weeks. Immigration attorneys warn that the new policy extends beyond direct participation in activism, affecting even students who only engage online.
New policies and the rising risks for students
The updated policies call for thorough social media reviews for all international students, including those already residing in the US as well as new applicants for F-1 (academic), M (vocational), and J (exchange) visas. As immigration attorney Jath Shao explained, the initiative focuses on scrutinizing students’ online behavior to determine if they pose a potential risk to US security or public order. “Even those who are not physically involved in campus protests but have shown support online are being targeted,” said Shao in an interview with Times of India.
The practice of canceling visas for online activity is not new. Under the March 25 directive from Rubio, consular officers are now required to take screenshots of any derogatory content found on students’ social media profiles. If such content is deemed to violate visa eligibility requirements, the visa will be revoked. “Social media findings are preserved to ensure that the applicant cannot alter them later,” the directive stipulates.
The consequences for international students
For students affected by the new policies, the consequences can be severe. According to the DOS, those whose visas are revoked face immediate deportation and are required to leave the US without notice. Students must also cancel their visas at the nearest US embassy or consulate. If they remain in the country illegally, they could be subject to fines or detention. As noted by Shao, “This situation complicates the process for affected students who may now have to navigate potential bans on re-entering the US for years.”
The crackdown raises concerns about the erosion of free speech for international students and the broader implications for global activism. Immigration lawyers recommend that students seek legal counsel to defend their status, but with the new regulations in place, regaining a visa may prove increasingly difficult.
