The Grassroot Innovation Internship Scheme introduced by the Jharkhand government across colleges aims to provide students a chance to work in villages as part of their academic curriculum. Under this scheme, students will be required to conduct field research on Jharkhand’s cultural heritage, food, traditional medicine, art, and music, contributing to the documentation of the state’s customs and traditions.
This initiative aligns with the New Education Policy (NEP)-2020, which mandates internships as a part of higher education. The programme will also tackle social, educational, environmental, technological, and health-related challenges at the grassroots level. Through interactions with villagers, students will learn techniques to enhance productivity with minimal effort.
This scheme, which is said to be inspired by the Gujarat Grassroots Augmentation Network (GIAN), will last for eight weeks, taking place during the summer vacation. Each selected student will receive a stipend of Rs 10,000, disbursed in two installments of Rs 5000.
Trainers guiding the students will receive Rs 20,000, also paid in two instalments. A six-week field visit will be mandatory as part of the internship.
Annually, 17,380 students will be selected for training under this scheme. The programme will be implemented across all 4,345 panchayats in the state. Groups of four trainees will be formed to study grassroots innovation and local needs. Each group will have a mentor, appointed by the Registrar or Principal of their respective institution. A mentor will oversee a maximum of five groups, ensuring structured guidance throughout the internship.
