JEE Advanced Attempt Limit Case: Supreme Court to hear petition challenging the reduction of attempts today.

The Supreme Court will hear the case regarding the JEE Advanced attempt limit today, January 7, 2025. It is listed as item 50 on the supplementary list. The petition, filed by 22 students challenging the reduction of the attempt limit from three to two, was supposed to be heard on January 6, 2025. However, the hearing was postponed because Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was busy with another case. The first hearing for this case was originally set for December 20, 2024.

The Joint Admission Board (JAB), which manages admissions to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), initially announced on November 5, 2024, that students would have three attempts for JEE Advanced. However, just days later, on November 18, 2024, the decision was reversed, reducing the attempt limit back to two.

This sudden change has caused significant concern among students, especially those who had planned their preparation based on the extra attempt. Some students even left top colleges like NITs to focus on JEE Advanced 2025.

Now, students are urging JAB to reinstate the three-attempt rule. In response, JEE aspirants have taken the matter to the Supreme Court, arguing that the reversal disrupted their plans. Many had already registered for JEE Main, joined coaching programmes, and made major adjustments, such as leaving other college courses.

The petitioners claim the JAB’s decision was unfair, lacked transparency, and was made without proper consultation. They are asking the Supreme Court to cancel the November 18, 2024 order and allow students who passed Class 12 in 2023 to take JEE Advanced 2025 with the original three-attempt limit.

Notably, according to the JAB, the decision to restore the two-attempt rule was made after considering several competing factors.

“The decision was made after considering various requirements during a meeting held on November 15, 2024. As a result, the earlier eligibility criteria, which have been in place since 2013, are being restored. All other eligibility criteria remain unchanged,” reads the official notice.
