This year, 14 candidates from across the country, including five — the highest from a single state — from Rajasthan, have scored perfect 100 in the first session of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains, the entry-level exam for engineering colleges, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced on Tuesday.
According to NTA, 12 of the 14 top scorers are from the general category while one each belongs to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) and Scheduled Caste (SC) categories. Only one of the perfect scorers is a female candidate, Sai M Guthikonda.
The number of top scorers for the first session (held in January), however, is lower than last year’s session-1 exam when 23 candidates bagged perfect 100 percentiles. Results for the second session (paper-2) of JEE -Mains in BArch/B Planning will be declared later.
The second session of the exam is scheduled in April. Based on the results of JEE-Mains Paper 1 and Paper 2, the candidates will be shortlisted to appear for the JEE-Advanced exam, which is conducted for entry into the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). After both sessions of JEE (Mains)-2025, the ranks of the candidates will be released, taking into consideration the best of the two NTA scores in accordance with the policy already made.
The combined results for both the sessions are declared in April. In April 2024, a total of 56 candidates had scored 100 percentiles, of which 23 were in session -1 while 33 were from the second session, which was a record number in many years that led to cut-offs for JEE-Advanced being on a five -year high.
JEE-Mains 2025 exam for BE/BTech (Paper-1) was held between January 22-29 in which 12.58 lakh candidates appeared.
Among the candidates who secured 100 percentile this year, five are from Rajasthan, two each from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh (UP) and one each from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana, and Maharashtra.
According to NTA officials, the scores are normalised across multi-session papers and are based on the relative performance of all those who appeared for the examination in one session. The marks obtained are converted into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees. NTA score is different from the percentage of marks obtained.
The marks obtained are converted into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees, they said.
The scores of 39 candidates have not been declared as they were found “indulging in unfair means practices”.
Besides India, the exam was also conducted in 15 cities outside India, including Manama, Doha, Dubai, Kathmandu, Muscat, Riyadh, Sharjah, Singapore, Kuwait City, Kuala Lumpur, Abu Dhabi, West Java, Washington, Lagos and Munich.
What Toppers Say
Om Prakash Behera, one of the perfect scorers who studied from a coaching institute in Kota, said he “focuses on the present” and doesn’t even keep a mobile phone because of its tendency to distract.
“For JEE Main, I mainly focused on NCERT syllabus. The graph of marks keeps fluctuating in weekly tests, but I tried to give my best. After every test, I used to do a self-analysis of the mistakes I made. In the next test, I would try not to repeat those mistakes,” said Behera, who is originally from Bhubaneshwar, Odisha.
He added that currently, he is busy preparing for JEE-Advanced and studies for 8-9 hours daily. He plans to pursue BTech in Computer Science from IIT-Mumbai.
“I like to read novels in my free time,” said Behera, whose lecturer mother moved to Kota with him three years ago. His father is an administrative officer with the Odisha government.
Arnav Singh, a resident of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, who also bagged a 100-percentile, said his mantra for success is simple — regular hard work.
“I complete whatever homework I get after coaching class every day. Along with practice, it also throws up new doubts. The more doubts you clear, the stronger your grip on the topic will be. I study for 10-12 hours daily,” said Singh, who too dreams of joining IIT-Mumbai.
