A girl attempting to impersonate a genuine candidate during the Common Entrance Test (CET) in Bengaluru on Thursday was caught, thanks to the Karnataka Examinations Authority’s (KEA) newly introduced QR code-based facial recognition app.
The incident occurred at the Silver Valley Public PU College exam centre on 7th Cross Road, Malleswaram. The girl, who identified herself as Tuba Fathima Jameel, arrived to write the mathematics paper. After reaching the centre, she reportedly spent nearly an hour in the restroom before trying to enter the examination hall with an admit card that featured a QR code.
However, when her photograph was captured and verified using KEA’s facial-recognition app, it was found that she was not the genuine candidate. Before authorities could escalate the matter to the college principal, the girl fled the premises, the KEA said in a statement.
Further investigation by KEA authorities revealed she had pasted her photo on the admit card of a registered candidate, Tabu Naz, who was writing the exam at the same centre. While she altered the candidate’s name, the hall ticket number and QR code remained unchanged. She had also entered incorrect test dates on the document.
The KEA has ordered a probe and asked the college principal to submit a detailed report along with CCTV footage. Legal action will be taken, said KEA Executive Director H Prasanna.
This was the first time the KEA deployed its new facial-recognition system during CET. The app has been in use for three days without any reported glitches, the authority added.
