Karnataka Schools Closed: Heavy rains are lashing Karnataka, leading to the closure of schools. The IMD has warned of widespread rainfall across the state until June 17.

Karnataka Schools Closed: Karnataka is experiencing intense pre-monsoon showers as the southwest monsoon becomes active again after a brief break of nearly two weeks. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts, warning of continued heavy rainfall in the coming days. So far, heavy rains have lashed Bengaluru, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi, with more rainfall likely across the state.

In response to the heavy downpour and the red alert, several district administrations have taken precautionary measures and announced the closure of schools and colleges to ensure the safety of students.

In Kodagu, the District Commissioner has declared a holiday for all Anganwadi centres in the district on Tuesday, June 11, after the red alert was issued.

The Udupi district administration has also announced the closure of Anganwadi centres, primary and secondary schools, government-aided schools, and private educational institutions on Thursday, June 12. This step was taken in view of the ongoing heavy rains and the forecast of more severe weather.

In Dakshina Kannada, Deputy Commissioner M. P. Mullai Muhilan has declared a holiday for all schools and Anganwadis on Thursday, June 12, as a safety measure following the weather warnings.

Meanwhile, in Dharwad district, Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu has declared a one-day holiday for all Anganwadis, primary and high schools, pre-university (PU) colleges, and degree colleges on June 12 due to the ongoing heavy rains.

According to the IMD, Karnataka is expected to receive widespread rainfall across most districts till June 17. The coastal districts are expected to be hit the hardest, with Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi districts likely to witness heavy to very heavy rains, along with strong winds of 30 to 40 kmph. Isolated areas may even receive extremely heavy rainfall, raising concerns about flooding and other possible disruptions.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety instructions as the rains continue to batter several parts of the state.
