Authorities in Karnataka’s coastal regions are on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall along the state’s coastline.

In response to the forecast, district administrations in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Shivamogga have announced a holiday for all schools on Monday. Official orders issued by the Deputy Commissioners state that all educational institutions, including Anganwadis, government, and private schools up to the high school level, will remain closed.

This precautionary measure has been taken as the ongoing monsoon rains have led to waterlogging, localised flooding, and an increased risk of landslides in several areas.

In Shivamogga district, heavy rains in parts of Sagar and Hosanagar taluks led the tahsildars to declare a holiday for schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres on Monday.

Officials have also advised people to stay indoors during heavy rains and asked schools to ensure all safety measures are in place before reopening.

Meanwhile, heavy rains have already claimed two lives in the Uttara Kannada district, as reported by news agency PTI. In one tragic incident, a two-year-old child drowned after accidentally falling into a water-filled roadside drain near their home in Jali, Bhatkal. CCTV footage confirmed the child’s accidental fall on Saturday.

In a separate incident in Gulme Belalkhanda village, Bhatkal taluk, a 50-year-old man, Madewa Narayana Devadiga, lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters while walking home. He reportedly lost his balance in the strong current. Police have registered both cases at the Bhatkal Rural Police Station.

As coastal Karnataka continues to be battered by heavy rainfall, with several districts under red and orange alerts, disaster management teams and emergency services remain on high alert to respond to any emergencies in the coming days.
