The Kerala Board Of Public Examinations (KBPE) has revised its grace mark policy for Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) and Higher Secondary (HSLC) examinations, increasing the limit of grace marks awarded to students under various categories.
Under the updated rules, the maximum grace marks for participants in state-level sports and arts events have been raised from 10 to 15 marks. National-level participants will now receive up to 20 marks, up from the previous 15. These marks will be distributed proportionately across subjects, as earlier.
Another significant change is for NCC and Scout & Guide cadets. Previously capped at 5 marks, the maximum grace marks have now been doubled to 10. Similarly, students with approved participation in science fairs and IT fairs can now claim up to 10 grace marks instead of the earlier 5.
Kerala SSLC, Plus Two grace marks: Then vs now
Category | Previous Grace Mark Limit | Revised Grace Mark Limit |
State-level Arts/Sports | 10 marks | 15 marks |
National-level Arts/Sports | 15 marks | 20 marks |
NCC / Scouts & Guides | 5 marks | 10 marks |
Science / Maths / IT Fairs | 5 marks | 10 marks |
The KBPE in its notice has stated that the revision aims to “acknowledge the increasing competitiveness and effort involved in these extracurricular activities,” as noted in the official order issued by the General Education Department.
In addition to the hike, the order clarifies that grace marks should be applied only for eligibility and not for improving grades. This means students can use them to pass a subject or exam but not to increase their grade from, say, B to A. The total maximum grace marks that a student can avail of across all categories remains subject to the 30-mark cap.
Furthermore, the Kerala Pareeksha Bhavan will be responsible for implementing these changes and ensuring they are uniformly applied across schools affiliated with the state board.
