A third-year B.Tech student from KIIT University, Arnav Mukherjee, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Bhubaneswar’s Mancheswar area on Tuesday. This marks the second mysterious death at the institute in two months. Arnav, originally from Bankura district, West Bengal, was residing in a university hostel. His body was discovered in an under-construction building, and local residents immediately alerted the Mancheswar police. Upon their arrival, the police recovered the body and sent it to Capital Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.
While the cause remains unclear, the circumstances surrounding how Arnav reached Mancheswar, far from his hostel, are under investigation. The police have registered a case of unnatural death and are actively pursuing leads, including examining CCTV footage, questioning hostel mates, and analyzing his call records.
The authorities have yet to comment on the incident, and KIIT University officials have not released any statements regarding Arnav’s death.

Nepali Girl Prakriti Lamsal Death In February
Notably, KIIT University is already facing controversy following the recent death of a Nepali student. In February 2025, Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student from Nepal, was found dead in the hostel.
Her untimely death, suspected to be a suicide, sparked widespread protests and raised significant concerns about student welfare and KIIT University’s accountability.
In response, the Odisha government formed a high-level committee to investigate the incident, following reports of alleged misbehaviour and assaults on students within the campus.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) held KIIT University accountable for the death, citing negligence on the part of university authorities. The NHRC also instructed Odisha’s Chief Secretary, Manoj Ahuja, to submit an action report within four weeks.
An NHRC team conducted an investigation from March 6 to 8, which revealed that the university’s International Relations Officer (IRO), the disciplinary committee, and the administration had failed to ensure the safety of students, contributing to the tragic incident.
