KIIT Suicide Case: KIIT, one of India’s most prestigious institutions is under scrutiny following the alleged suicide of a Nepali student.

The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar, one of India’s prestigious institutions, is currently under scrutiny following the alleged suicide of a Nepali student. The Indian Embassy in Nepal has assured a thorough investigation into the tragic death of Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student at KIIT, who reportedly died by suicide in her hostel on Sunday.

The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police on Monday arrested the accused, identified as 21-year-old Advik Srivastava from Lucknow.

The institute has also suspended two officials after a video showing them misbehaving with Nepali students went viral. The university issued an apology in an official statement.

Courses Offered At KIIT

The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) began as an industrial training institution in 1992-1993. In 1997, the institute expanded to offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses, introducing programmes in Engineering, Management, and Computer Applications. By 2007, KIIT added several other disciplines, including the School of Law, Biotechnology, Medical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Nursing, and Mass Communication. Today, it is recognised as a private institute offering Doctorate, UG, and PG-level courses.

KIIT, renowned for its engineering programmes, offers a 4-year B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering. The course is approved by AICTE, accredited by NBA, and has a total intake of 240 seats.

How Reputed Is KIIT?

Located in Bhubaneswar, the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) spans 8,900 acres and employs over 3,000 faculty members and researchers, along with 15,000 staff members.

The KIIT is accredited by NAAC with an ‘A++’ grade. It holds various national and international accreditations, reflecting its strong academic standards.

In the 2024 NIRF rankings, KIIT was placed 28th in the ‘Overall’ category, maintaining its position among the top 50 institutions in India for the third year in a row. It also secured 15th position in the ‘University’ category, marking a consistent rise for the second consecutive year.

The institute has shown steady progress in engineering as well, climbing two spots to 37th in the 2024 NIRF rankings.

On the global stage, KIIT made a significant jump in the 2024 QS World University Rankings, moving up 50 positions to reach 351st in the ‘Asia’ category, further establishing its growing international reputation.

KIIT Placement Records

According to the latest report, the highest and average packages offered during the KIIT 2023 placements were INR 63 LPA and INR 6.5 LPA, respectively. Over 350 recruiters participated in the placement process, providing 4,500 job offers to eligible B.Tech students. So far, 90% of students have been placed. Some of the top recruiters at KIIT University placements 2023 included Tata Power, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel, JSW Energy, JWIL Infra Limited, Stellantis, Accenture, Cognizant, TCS, and others.
