Madhya Pradesh’s first ‘skill lab’ for MBBS students to come up at MGM soon – Times of India

INDORE: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGMMC) is setting up first-of-its-kind ‘skill lab’ in Madhya Pradesh under Rs 3 crore project of Centre to train MBBS students.
The project for setting up the lab in the medical college, which is nearing completion of phase 1 (construction), was sanctioned in 2019. Infrastructure construction is supposed to be completed within the next two months, officials said.
The skill lab will provide a safe, simulated environment for students to learn, practice and with observed performing skills risks involved in direct patient exposure without adequate preparation and supervision will be mitigated.
MGMMC dean Dr Sanjay Dixit said, “The National Medical Commission has mandated skill labs in the medical colleges to give hands-on to MBBS students through mannequins in those laboratories.”
“The laboratories have become necessary as the number of MBBS seats have been increased from 150 to 250 in medical colleges so it won’t be possible for every student to get experience through patients. The skill labs would be of great use for students for hands-on training. It will be a first-of-its-kind lab in Madhya Pradesh,” said Dr Dixit.,”
The labs would attempt to recreate clinical environment and tasks which future health care workers must perform with various levels of complexity. The lab would function under emergency medicine department and around 10 to 12 faculty would be trained,who would further impart training to students.
The laboratory is expected to become functional by the next session 2023-24 for MBBS students at the medical college. The Centre had sanctioned the skill lab project simultaneously for NSCB Medical College, Jabalpur, Gajra Raja Medical College, Gwalior, Shyam Shah Medical College, Rewa and MGMMC, Indore in 2019.
