The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mizoram, predicting extremely heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong gusty winds throughout the state on Thursday. In response to this severe weather forecast, the Mizoram government has decided to close all schools as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff members.
A formal notification released late Wednesday by the state’s School Education Department stated that the decision was taken after consultations with the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department. This move was based on the IMD’s warnings and updates received from its Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati and the Meteorological Centre in Aizawl.
Authorities have strongly advised the public to stay alert and take all necessary precautions to remain safe. The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), along with district-level emergency centres, has been placed on high alert to respond quickly to any emergencies. Residents are urged to reach out to emergency helpline numbers in case of urgent situations. The numbers provided include 1077, 1070, 0389-2342520, and the universal emergency number 112.
Additionally, the Mizoram Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department has issued an advisory urging citizens to remain indoors during the severe weather and to report any incidents immediately to the nearest emergency centre.

This alert comes amid painful memories from May last year, when heavy and continuous rainfall caused landslides in Aizawl and other districts, resulting in the tragic loss of more than 30 lives. Since then, the state government has stepped up its efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and enhance coordination among various agencies to prevent such calamities in the future.
Meanwhile in Karnataka, Heavy rains continue in Kodagu, and a holiday has been declared for Anganwadi, primary and high schools and pre-university colleges for two days, May 29 and 30. District Collector Venkat Raja has issued an order, saying that the holiday has been declared as a precautionary measure in the wake of heavy rains accompanied by storms.
