India on Wednesday launched Operation Sindoor to strike terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir to avenge the massacre of 26 civilians in J&K’s Pahalgam last month. The Indian Air Force carried out a late-night mission, destroying nine terrorist hideouts, including those of Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Besides, India is also conducting a nationwide mock drill on Wednesday to encourage and instil emergency preparedness among citizens, including at sensitive locations.
In the aftermath of Operation Sindoor and the ongoing mock drill, here’s a list of cities where schools, offices and banks will be closed today, May 7 2025.
School Closures In Affected Areas
In the wake of Operation Sindoor, all educational institutions in Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Rajouri, and Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir are closed on Wednesday, May 7. The Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir stated that schools, colleges, and educational institutions in Baramulla, Kupwara, and Gurez will remain closed.
Additionally, schools and colleges in the border areas of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat are closed for security reasons. All schools in Pathankot, Ferozepur, and Fazilka in Punjab are shut. While no advisory has been issued for other schools, all educational institutions are advised to adhere to safety standards.
Flight Cancellations
Due to the escalating conflict between India and Pakistan, several airlines have cancelled flights traversing this area. The airspace from Rajasthan to Pakistan is largely vacant. Airlines such as Air India and SpiceJet have significantly altered their flight schedules because of the security situation in northern India following Operation Sindoor.
All flights to and from Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, and Rajkot are cancelled until noon on May 7 for security reasons.
No Public Holiday In Offices On Wednesday
The government has not declared a national holiday on May 7. Both government and private offices will remain open.
Banks will also remain operational, with branches open as usual and online/digital banking services functioning smoothly. The Reserve Bank of India has instructed all banks to be vigilant under heightened security alerts.
The Home Ministry has ordered a mock drill in 244 districts across the country on Wednesday. In its advisory, the ministry urges people not to spread rumours or panic. Security agencies are fully alert, and the situation is under control, with life continuing as normal. Citizens are advised to remain extra vigilant in crowded areas, promptly report any suspicious activities to the police, and beware of fake news.
