In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, 34-year-old Gurdeep Kaur Vasu from Indore has made history by passing the Class 12 board examination despite being unable to see, hear, or speak. Her achievement is an important milestone in Madhya Pradesh’s educational history.
According to the results declared by the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) on Tuesday, Gurdeep secured 207 out of 400 marks, earning a second-division pass. She appeared for the exams in English, Geography, Political Science, and Drawing and Designing — a rare feat considering her physical challenges.

Gurdeep’s success was supported by the Anand Service Society, a local NGO dedicated to the welfare of persons with disabilities. The organisation has been helping her with her education for many years. Monika Purohit, the director of the society and an expert in sign language, explained that Gurdeep communicates by pressing hands and fingers in a unique form of tactile sign language.
“To convey our messages, we also press her hands and fingers in sign language,” Purohit told reporters. She added that special Braille books were sourced from Dehradun to aid Gurdeep’s studies.
During the examination, Gurdeep was assisted by a writer provided under MPBSE rules. Notably, the writer was also deaf and mute, making the achievement a shared testament to strength and perseverance.
Gurdeep’s accomplishment has sparked celebrations in her household. Her younger sister, Harpreet, who also acts as her interpreter, shared Gurdeep’s aspirations to pursue higher education and learn computer skills. She added that the family hopes Gurdeep will secure a government job in the Class IV category under the Divyang quota to achieve self-reliance.
