Pursuing an MBA at a top-tier institute in India is a dream for many, but it comes with a hefty price tag. In 2025, a two-year MBA at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) costs between Rs 34.15 lakh (for single accommodation) and Rs 36.20 lakh (for married housing).
This amount includes tuition, hostel and mess fees, and academic materials, making it one of the most expensive MBA programmes in the country. Similarly, other top IIMs such as Bangalore and Calcutta charge between Rs 26 lakh and Rs 34 lakh, while the newer IIMs have fees ranging from Rs 16.28 lakh to Rs 21 lakh. With inflation and rising operational expenses, these costs are likely to increase annually.
Infosys founder Narayana Murthy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIM Ahmedabad to establish a fully funded, inflation-adjusted scholarship to support meritorious students amid rising MBA costs.
The annual scholarship will be awarded to the student who secures the highest Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in the first year of the Post Graduate Programme (PGP), a press release stated.
“I am pleased to establish this scholarship at IIMA in honour of Professor Jaswant G Krishnayya’s enduring legacy and significant contributions to IIMA. This also serves as a testament to Professor Krishnayya’s pivotal role in shaping my early life and career,” Murthy said.
The scholarship will cover all major expenses, including tuition fees, hostel accommodation, course materials, and mess charges – effectively making the IIMA education free for the recipient over the two-year period.
Murthy has committed to funding the scholarship for the next 20 years, with an estimated total payout of Rs 12 crore. “It is my hope that this scholarship will inspire students to strive for excellence and make a positive impact on the world,” he added.
Pankaj Patel, Chairperson of the IIMA Board of Governors, highlighted Murthy’s deep-rooted connection with the institute, which began in 1969 when he joined as chief systems programmer and later continued as Chairman from 2002 to 2007.
“This scholarship reflects his (Narayana Murthy) continued commitment to IIMA’s mission and the transformative power of education. We are honoured by his gesture, which pays tribute to a respected faculty member and supports future generations of leaders,” Patel said.
Echoing this sentiment, Professor Bharat Bhasker, Director of IIMA, said the initiative aligns perfectly with the institute’s mission of fostering merit-based access to quality management education while honouring the contributions of those who built its foundation.
