Missing student data on the NMC portal may block MBBS registration. Confirm with your college to secure your eligibility to practise medicine in future
MBBS students must promptly contact their medical colleges to ensure that their NMC data is accurate and complete. (News18)
Students admitted to MBBS programmes for the 2024–25 academic year are being urged to verify their registration status, as the National Medical Commission (NMC) has mandated that medical colleges across the country must upload the complete information of students admitted for the 2024-25 academic year on their portal. Failure to do so will result in these students being denied registration to practise as doctors. Incomplete data may hinder their future medical practice.
NMC’s Position On Missing Data
The NMC has announced that there are a total of 118,000 MBBS seats available across the country. However, information for only 115,250 students has been uploaded onto their portal to date, leaving thousands of students’ details unrecorded.
Several medical colleges have either failed to submit the required data or have provided incomplete information, including missing names, merit numbers, dates of birth, admission dates, and roll numbers.
Multiple Deadline Extensions
The NMC initially set a deadline of November 8, 2024 for colleges to upload the data. Due to delays, this deadline was extended first to November 23 and subsequently to December 10, 2024. Despite these extensions, many colleges have remained negligent.
The NMC has now taken a firm stance, warning that students with incomplete data on the portal will not be registered to practise medicine.
Advice For MBBS Students
The NMC urges students to contact their medical college or counselling authority without delay to confirm that their details have been uploaded to the NMC portal. If the student’s name is absent, they should promptly raise the matter with their college to avoid any difficulties in the future.
Findings From The Investigation: Breaches Of Rules
An internal inquiry by the NMC uncovered several breaches by medical colleges:
- Some institutions admitted students to the MBBS programme without meeting the necessary qualifications.
- In 30–40 cases, students with less than 50% marks in their 12th-grade Physics, Chemistry, and Biology were admitted.
- Certain colleges enrolled more students than their approved seat capacity, in direct contravention of NMC regulations.
Eligibility Criteria For MBBS Admission
To qualify for MBBS admission, candidates must pass the NEET-UG examination. Additional criteria include:
- General category candidates must secure at least 50 percentile in NEET.
- Candidates with disabilities (PwD) require a minimum of 45 percentile.
- SC/ST/OBC candidates must achieve at least 40 percentile.
- Students must have attained at least 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in Class 12 (40% for reserved categories).
- Other age and educational qualifications must also be fulfilled.
Importance Of NMC’s Stringent Measures
The NMC’s rigorous measures are crucial to ensure that only suitably qualified individuals enter the medical profession. Negligence by colleges can jeopardise even deserving students’ futures.
If you have been admitted to an MBBS programme this year, it is imperative to verify with your college that your details have been submitted to the NMC. Take prompt action to safeguard your career in medicine.
