A 19-year-old National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) aspirant, Indhu, died by suicide in Viluppuram after her father allegedly scolded her for a mistake while filling out an application form. The incident occurred while filing an OBC certificate application form, reported NDTV.

Indhu’s father, who was at a government centre for the application process, requested a PIN sent to her. She mistakenly provided the wrong PIN twice, causing her father distress. After successfully completing the application process, her father came back home and allegedly scolded her for the mistake, the report added.

It was earlier reported she died by suicide due to exam pressure but these claims were refuted by the police.

Indhu, who studied at a government school, had previously undergone NEET coaching and attempted the exam last year. She secured 350 marks and failed to qualify for the exam.

Earlier, in January, an 18-year-old NEET aspirant from Odisha allegedly hanged himself in his hostel room in Ambedkar Colony in Kota’s Vigyan Nagar area. Abhijeet Giri, a resident of Mayurbhanj district in Odisha, had been preparing for the NEET at a coaching institute since April 2024. This was the third suicide by a coaching student in Kota this year.

Prior to that, on January 7, 2025, two male students who were preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) in Kota allegedly died by suicide in two separate incidents. A prominent hub for medical and engineering coaching institutes, a total of 17 suicide cases were reported in Kota in 2024.
