Police lodged an FIR on Thursday after they recovered bundles of burnt Rs 500 currency notes, admit cards, and OMR sheets from a room at the Chanakya hostel in Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). A minor fire broke out in the room on Wednesday at the Chanakya hostel but no casualties or injuries were reported.
According to media reports, during the investigation, police recovered several bundles of burnt currency notes, totalling around Rs 2.75 lakh. The police also recovered admit cards and OMR sheets for various competitive examinations along with NEET UG and PG admit cards and OMR sheets. They also found the MBBS OMR sheet of Aryabhatta Knowledge University.
The hostel room where the police found the incriminating material was illegally occupied by postgraduate student Ajay Kumar Singh. The room of the Singh on the second floor had caught fire on Wednesday and three fire tenders were pressed into service to control it. Singh is now absconding. Reportedly, Singh passed his PG in 2022 but he was still occupying the hostel room and there were three rooms under his control.
“The police were informed by the hostel authorities that the room was illegally occupied by Ajay Kumar, a student of PMCH and a resident of Samastipur. He is absconding. A case was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by the principal of PMCH,” Abdul Halim, SHO, Pirbahor police station, told PTI.
When asked if the recovered admit cards included those for the NEET (Undergraduate) examination, as reported in some media outlets, he responded, “I can’t confirm that specifically. The seizure list is still being prepared. However, it is true that admit cards for various competitive exams were recovered.” Further investigation is ongoing.
NEET UG Paper Leak
The NEET-UG 2024 was conducted on May 5 for 23.33 lakh students at 4,750 centres in 571 cities, including in 14 cities overseas. The results were released on June 4 but soon owing to a large number of toppers, reports of a paper leak surfaced on social media. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in July 2024 arrested the alleged kingpin of the Bihar NEET-UG case from Patna. In October 2024, the agency filed a third charge sheet in connection with the alleged leak of the NEET-UG exam paper. In the charge sheet submitted to a special CBI court in Patna, the CBI has named 21 individuals as accused.
