Study Abroad Trends: University Living, a global student housing marketplace, has released a new report, Beyond Beds & Benches – Decoding ANZ’s Education System, in an event in Delhi. The report explores how higher education in Australia and New Zealand is changing, with a growing number of international students, especially from India. It highlights key opportunities and challenges for universities, policymakers, and accommodation providers as they adapt to this increasing demand.
Saurabh Arora, Founder & CEO of University Living, said, “Australia and New Zealand are taking strategic steps to attract international students by introducing policies that simplify the study-abroad journey and enhance post-study career prospects. New Zealand’s streamlined visa processes and work-rights policies, along with the recently announced NZ$10,000 scholarships for high-achieving Indian students, reflect the government’s commitment to global talent. With Indian student enrolments projected to grow by 93.9% from 2025 to 2030—from 22,225 to 24,594—New Zealand is emerging as a strong alternative to traditional study destinations.”
Australia continues to be a top choice for international students due to its world-class universities, strong industry connections, and excellent post-study work opportunities. The international education sector contributes AUD 47.8 billion to the Australian economy. Favourable migration policies and targeted scholarships are helping the country maintain its appeal for Indian students.
With these policy changes, more Indian students are choosing Australia and New Zealand for their higher education. As a result, the demand for student housing is also increasing, further establishing these countries as top global study destinations.
Australia and New Zealand have introduced major visa reforms to make studying there more accessible. Australia’s extended post-study work rights and New Zealand’s simplified visa process are creating better opportunities for students seeking quality education and career growth.
Both countries are focusing on industry-aligned education, particularly in STEM, healthcare, and business, ensuring that international graduates gain the skills needed for employment. While the US, UK, and Canada remain popular, Australia and New Zealand are catching up, with India, China, Nepal, Vietnam, and Indonesia being key source countries.
To strengthen their positions as global education hubs, both governments are investing in better education infrastructure, student support services, and international partnerships to improve the study-abroad experience.
Student enrolments in Australia and New Zealand have bounced back strongly after the pandemic, with continued growth expected through 2030. By 2025, the number of Indian students in Australia is expected to exceed 101,552, while New Zealand is projected to host 22,225 Indian students.
