An assistant professor at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar, Assam, has been suspended following allegations of sexual harassment by a first-year student. Registrar Prof. Asim Roy confirmed the suspension of Professor Raju to news18.com.

According to a handwritten confession letter that has gone viral on social media, the student from the Electrical Engineering department accused Raju of molesting her in his chamber on March 20. She alleged that he had called her to discuss her academic performance and, under the pretext of questioning her low marks, inappropriately touched her.

“He asked me to explain the reason for my low scores and then suddenly started touching me. He told me to feel comfortable and suggested that my marks could be managed if I obeyed him,” the student wrote in her note.

Following the allegations, students staged protests demanding Raju’s removal. The demonstrations continued through Thursday night and were eventually called off on Friday morning after the administration assured them of his suspension.

Raju has faced similar allegations before. In 2021, a student accused him of sexual harassment, but a local court exonerated him due to a lack of evidence and the complainant’s absence during the proceedings.

The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) at NIT Silchar has initiated a formal probe into the allegations. Tasked with handling sexual harassment cases under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013, the committee has assured a fair and thorough investigation.

Authorities at NIT Silchar have not yet issued an official statement on further action against the accused professor.
