The Andhra Pradesh government has banned the use of mobile phones in schools across the state. Teachers as well as the students are no longer allowed to take their mobile phones inside the classrooms. In its order prohibiting the use of mobiles in classrooms, the Andhra Pradesh government said:
“The teachers should handover their mobile phones to the headmaster before they go to the classrooms.”
According the state government, the decision of banning the use of mobile phones in school classrooms was taken based on the UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring System to avoid interruptions to teaching. The decision was taken after discussing the matter with the unions of teachers, a statement from the state government said.
The U.N. body endorsed banning smartphones from schools. It noted that globally one in four countries has imposed such bans either as law or as a policy out of concern for data privacy, safety and child’s well-being.
The UNESCO warned against an uncritical rush toward embrace of digital products in educational settings, noting that “there is little robust evidence on digital technology’s added value in education” and that “a lot of the evidence comes from those trying to sell it”.
