RRB Group D Recruitment 2025: The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has announced that over 1.08 crore candidates have applied for the Group D recruitment under notification CEN 08/2024. Notably, among the different regions as segregated by the RRB, Mumbai received the highest number of applications, with 15,59,100 (or 15.59 lakh) candidates applying.

The Indian Railways Group D recruitment drive includes various Level 1 positions across the Railways, for job-roles such as Track Maintainer Grade-IV, Assistant Pointsman, and technical assistants in departments like Electrical, Mechanical, and Signal and Telecommunication.

The RRB had earlier announced a total of 32,438 vacancies for these Group D posts. However, the now disclosed substantial number of applications indicates that the selection process will be highly competitive, due to the significant disparity between the number of applicants and available positions. With the online registration round concluding, the RRB is expected to announce the examination dates for the Group D recruitment soon.

Application trends highlight broader issues in employment landscape

This overwhelming number of applications highlights the high demand for government employment opportunities. However, it also highlights underlying challenges in the broader employment landscape.

According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) last year, the unemployment rate in urban areas declined to a record low of 6.4% in the July-September 2024 quarter.

Despite this, concerns persist regarding the quality and sustainability of employment, especially among the youth. The India Employment Report 2024 notes that while there have been improvements in labour market indicators, these gains have coincided with periods of economic distress, suggesting that the quality of jobs remains a concern.

Employment data to be disclosed on a monthly basis

Furthermore, the government has initiated measures to enhance the frequency and transparency of employment data. Earlier, the government notified that starting May 15, 2025, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will release India’s unemployment data on a monthly basis, transitioning from the previous quarterly releases. This move aims to provide more timely insights into the labour market and assist in policy formulation.
