Patna schools up to class 8 closed from today until Jan 11 due to severe cold wave; temperatures drop to 6.7°C in parts of Bihar.

All government and private schools in Patna for up to class 8 remained closed today, January 1, 2026. Bihar is currently facing a cold wave, with many areas recording minimum temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius or lower, according to the Met office on Sunday.
Due to the severe cold, the Patna district administration has ordered all government and private schools up to class 8 to remain closed until January 11.
The coldest temperature in the state on Sunday was 6.7 degrees Celsius in Motihari, followed by Saran (6.9°C), Dehri (7°C), Samastipur (9.2°C), Vaishali (9.8°C), and Patna (10°C), as reported by the Met office.
Other areas such as Saharsa, Banka, Valmikinagar, Darbhanga, and Kishanganj also experienced cold conditions, with temperatures ranging between 10.1°C and 10.5°C.
Dense fog was observed in some parts of Bihar during the day, and the weather forecast predicts dense to very dense fog in several areas over the next two to three days.
In response to the cold, Patna’s District Magistrate, Chandrashekhar Singh, announced that all schools up to class 8, including pre-schools, Anganwadi centres, and coaching centres, will remain closed until January 11.
Additionally, the district administration had previously mandated that all private and government schools, including pre-schools, Anganwadi centres, and coaching centres, conduct academic activities between 9 am and 4 pm from January 2 to 6.

Jharkhand Closes Schools For Younger Students, Chandigarh Adjusts Timings
Amid a cold wave sweeping parts of northern India, Jharkhand and Chandigarh have implemented measures to ensure student safety during the harsh winter.
In Jharkhand, schools for students from kindergarten to Class 8 will remain closed from January 7 to 13, 2025. This directive applies to all educational institutions, including government, private, and minority schools.
Chandigarh has revised school schedules in response to the cold weather. Physical classes for students up to Class 8 have been suspended, with online classes commencing from 9 am.
For students in Classes 9 to 12, physical classes will now run from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Schools holding pre-board classes are permitted to start at 9 am. Staff timings have also been adjusted to align with these changes.
