The new amendment to the Philippine Medical Act provides Indian students with a clear pathway to practice medicine in the Philippines.

The Philippine Congress has approved significant amendments to the Philippine Medical Act of 1959, paving the way for foreign nationals to practice medicine in the country. Under the new law, students from other countries who complete their Doctor of Medicine degree from a Commission on Higher Education (CHED)-accredited Philippine institution and undergo a 12-month internship will be eligible to register and practice medicine in the Philippines. This reform opens up exciting opportunities for Indian students to pursue medical education in the Philippines and begin their careers in the healthcare sector.

The amendment, passed overwhelmingly in the House of Representatives (184-3-0), replaces the long-standing Medical Act of 1959. It introduces significant changes, including the creation of the Medical Education Council and the Professional Regulatory Board of Medicine, aimed at elevating academic standards, promoting ethical practices, and ensuring the Philippines remains competitive in global medical education.
