AMRITSAR: Encouraged by the positive response of newly onboarded postgraduate guides at the Golden Temple complex, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), is now poised to extend internships to Comparative Studies scholars from various universities aiming to enrich pilgrims’ understanding of Sikh religion and traditions in the visitor’s language and perspectives of religion along with cultivating a skilled cohort of next generation of guides for cost-free tours to the Golden Temple.
SGPC’s General Secretary, GS Grewal, informed on Monday that they had received enthusiastic feedback from the guides which spurred them to amplify the guide program. “We’ve chosen to provide internships to university students engaged in Comparative Studies. This will enable them to engage with devotees from various faiths, facilitating a comprehension of Sikhism’s religion, values, traditions, maryada (Sikh code of religious conduct) “ said Grewal adding that the same would foster cross-cultural understanding and enrich the spiritual experiences of visitors while nurturing a cadre of knowledgeable guides versed in Sikh ethos.
Giving further details, Amritpal Singh, Assistant Information Officer, SGPC, informed that presently they had 6 trained guides in the Parikrama (circumambulation ) of Golden Temple and 5 guides in the information officer. He said the guides wear white kurta pajamas or pant shirts with a jacket over it. He informed that a separate office was being set up in the Parikrama for the guides who have proved very helpful in guiding foreign delegates or the visitors from South India etc. He informed that two guides were also preparing for the Phd.
He, however, pointed out that many pilgrims harbored skepticism regarding the complimentary guide service offered by SGPC at the Golden Temple since many hotels provide paid guide services. “But we inform them about the cost-free guided tours to any pilgrims at the Golden Temple,” he said.
Sources here inform that several hotel charges around Rs 10000 to Rs 15000 for paid guide services that take a group of people to various places in the city including the Golden Temple.
Meanwhile, Grewal said they would also offer employment to deserving candidates from the internees.
