PROMOTION INTERVIEW QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS #1. Why do you want to be promoted?

“Thank you for this opportunity. I want to be promoted because it is the next stage of my career development, and I am ready to take on the responsibility. I have been focusing on developing the skills and qualities needed to excel in this higher position and will thrive on the responsibility that comes with the promotion. I also want to be promoted because I have much more to offer this company. I want to be in a position where I can influence progress in the business, coach and mentor others to reach their full potential, test new ideas, and innovate ways of working that will help the company be the market leader.”

PROMOTION INTERVIEW QUESTION #2. What have you done to prepare for a promotion?

“To prepare for this promotion, I have done several things. I informed my manager of my desire to gain a promotion. I observed other people in similar positions to understand their responsibilities and how they make decisions aligned with the company’s commercial and strategic goals.

I have read leadership books and studied online training courses to understand what it takes to lead.

Finally, I have considered what I will do in the role if I gain promotion to ensure I have a plan to succeed. I am confident that my preparation will empower me to positively impact the company and help it achieve its short, medium and long-term business objectives.”

PROMOTION INTERVIEW QUESTION #3. Why are you the best candidate for this promotion?

“I am the best candidate for this promotion because I have been loyal to the company, I want it to succeed, and I have a track record of success.

I plan to build a long-term career with this company and will work tirelessly to ensure my contribution to the business in this new role is impactful. I am the best candidate because I have prepared well for the promotion. I am under no illusion about the level of responsibility I will have and will take my duties seriously.

Finally, I am the best candidate because I support the senior management team. I embrace change with a positive attitude, understand how important it is to the organisation’s ongoing success and will train, coach and motivate my team to achieve great things.”

PROMOTION INTERVIEW QUESTION #4. If you don’t get the promotion, what will be your next steps?

“If I don’t get promoted, I will be disappointed. However, I will meet with my manager, obtain feedback on how I can improve, and take action to keep learning about the organisation and growing personally and professionally so I am in a stronger position the next time a promotion opportunity arises.

Having said that, I am ready for this promotion now and would relish the opportunity to have greater responsibility.”

PROMOTION INTERVIEW QUESTION #5. Tell me about a time you had to solve a significant problem in your department.

“In my current job, I have taken the lead during several challenging situations. Recently, I noticed a slight drop in customer service standards. I contacted several customers about their experience, and they informed me there was a delay in them receiving their goods.

I investigated the issue further and established a company supplier was constantly late with deliveries to the business, resulting in customers having to wait. I immediately sourced alternative suppliers and found one that offered improved terms and guaranteed delivery times.

I passed this information on to my manager for consideration, and they permitted me to switch suppliers. My actions resulted in an instantaneous improvement in customer service standards.”

PROMOTION INTERVIEW QUESTION #6. If we promote you, what will you do in the first 30 days?

“I already have a 30, 60 and 90-day plan of action that details what I will do in this role if I gain promotion. In the first 30 days, I will meet my senior manager to ascertain my responsibilities and to understand the immediate and long-term business goals.

I would then meet my team, introduce myself and explain that I would observe their performance for one week. During the initial one-week observation period, I would assess how the team performed and note their strengths, areas for improvement, and training needs. After one week, I would meet with my team again to praise their strengths, create a plan to overcome any weaknesses, provide training and guidance, and outline my vision for the team, including the values I expected everyone to demonstrate.

Finally, toward the end of the first 30 days, I would meet with all team members individually to conduct performance reviews and to establish goals for everyone to achieve.”

PROMOTION INTERVIEW QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS #7. If you are successful, how would you deal with work colleagues who applied but failed to get promoted?

“I would be sympathetic but encourage them to take action to develop the necessary skills and experience so they were ready for promotion the next time. I would offer to spend time mentoring and supporting them in their growth. We are all working for the same organisation, so it would be in my interest to nurture and help develop talented individuals that empower business leadership continuity.”
