DU Students Protest: The students are demanding postponement of exams due to several issues, including an incomplete syllabus and changes in faculty.
DU law campus students allege lathi charge amid protest over exam demand to postpone exam.
A protest by students at Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre turned chaotic after more than eight hours of demonstration on Monday night. The students were demanding the postponement of their semester exams due to several grievances, including incomplete syllabi, frequent changes in faculty, delayed allotments, and sudden syllabus updates. Around 60 police officers and some paramilitary forces were deployed to manage the situation. Some students alleged that the police lathi-charged them and used tear gas.
However, Delhi Police denied the allegations made by students.
“No lathi charge or tear gas was used by any of the police personnel on students,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), Delhi Police, Raja Banthia.
“We received a request from the DU administration and the Proctor of the Law Faculty stating that the faculty and staff, including the Dean, were unable to exit as the students had blocked the gates. The police arrived, created a corridor, and helped them leave. This has angered the students, leading to ongoing protests,” the DCP told ANI.
Banthia also confirmed that the exams, initially scheduled for December 26, have been postponed, and a committee will now decide on the revised dates.
Why Students Are Demanding Postponement Of Exams?
According to the students, classes were held for only 60 days, which they argue is less than the required 90 days. Students claim that the syllabus has not been completed, and therefore, the exam should be postponed until January 10, 2025.
Speaking to News18.com, Law student Deependra Dwivedi said, “We were protesting peacefully, but then the dean called in the police and paramilitary forces. They started beating us and even used tear gas.”
Even female students were reportedly beaten by male police officers, and several were injured, alleged Mukul.
“The brutal beating of female students by male police personnel is appalling and unacceptable. Several girls were injured, and many are traumatized,” Mukul added.

Himanshi, another student, stated, “Faculty of Law students were peacefully protesting to demand an extension of the exams but were met with excessive force, violating their fundamental rights. They were brutally beaten, injured, and humiliated. The use of force against unarmed students is unacceptable and demands immediate investigation, accountability, and justice.”
Requesting the administration to postpone the exams, Anand Ojha, a student, said, “We respectfully request to extend the examination date from December 26 to January 10. Due to the incomplete syllabus, additional time is needed to prepare.”
