Protest broke out at a private engineering college in Medchal after female students alleged their videos were being recorded from the hostel washroom.

A protest erupted at a private engineering college in Medchal after female students alleged that their videos were being recorded from the hostel washroom, police said on Thursday.

Responding to the matter, Telangana State Commission for Women chairperson Nerella Sharada instructed the Cyberabad police commissioner to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation.

She also requested a detailed ‘Action Taken Report’ from the police commissioner at the earliest.

Members of various student organisations joined the protests on the college premises, which took place on Wednesday night and Thursday.

Some protesters were seen breaking the lock on the college gate, while others climbed over it to enter the premises, shouting slogans like “We want justice.”

Upon learning of the issue, police reached the college to investigate.

A police official told the media that the female students suspected videos had been recorded earlier in the girls’ washroom.

Preliminary investigations revealed “negligence” on the part of the institute’s management, as workers’ rooms were built behind the girls’ hostel, the official said.

Police detained five suspects, collected their fingerprints, and analysed their mobile phones. However, no videos were found so far, authorities said.

A case has been registered, and further investigations are underway, they added.

A college official stated that female students complained on Wednesday, alleging someone had taken videos through the washroom window. The college has formed a committee to look into the matter, the official added.

The mobile phones of the cooking staff have also been handed over to the police for examination, the official mentioned.
