As many as 124 examination centres across Maharashtra are under the scanner as cheating/malpractice cases have been recorded during the Higher Secondary Examination (HSC) conducted in February-March this year.

Before the exams, the state education department had strictly warned that cheating cases would lead to a permanent ban in their recognition as an examination centre.

Out of the 124 centres under scanner, 44 are in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, 25 in Pune division, 19 in Nagpur division, 11 in Latur, 10 in Amravati, six in Nashik, five in Mumbai, three in Kolhapur Division and one in the Konkan division.

The state had recorded a total of 367 malpractice cases in the HSC exams, of which the maximum cases were reported from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (214). Pune and Nagpur recorded 45 and 33 cases respectively, followed by Latur (29), Amravati (17), Nashik (12), Mumbai (9), Kolhapur (7), and only one case in Konkan.

Director of Primary Education Sharad Gosavi on Monday said cheating cases at all the 124 centres would be scrutinised and their recognition will be permanently banned if the investigation finds merit in doing so.

Festive offer

The state government had included this year’s ‘Copy Mukt Abhiyaan’ initiative in the 100-day programme of the newly elected Mahayuti government in November last year. The programme aims to eliminate cheating and malpractice and promotes integrity among students. This year, in addition to flying squads teams and video surveillance of examination centres, drones were also used to ensure compliance with government directives.
