PANAJI: Students and self-sustainability enthusiasts in Goa got a firsthand experience of seeing various methodologies in environmentalism, repurposing and gardening in a live environment at a unique workshop recently held at Salvador-Do-Mundo.
The workshop was conducted at a bio-diversity garden made up entirely of discarded plants and waste memorabilia while employing in-house energy efficient resources, to care for and maintain all new and emerging plant life.
The participants walked through plant propagation and care, plumbing and electrical work at the garden wherein no engagement of external resources were used, thereby reducing installation and maintenance costs.
“All waste or discarded material on the property is given a new lease of life and wherever possible, recycled, upcycled or repurposed,” said Allwyn Siqueira, curator of the workshop who built the bio-diversity garden.
“Seeing is believing and leading by example. My approach to my organic and green lifestyle is the only way to positively showcase successful tried and tested techniques of repurposing, recycling, gardening, composting and solar power,” he added.
The workshop displayed efficient and economical use of various resources incurring zero cost, zero wastage and zero maintenance.
Shilpa Sukumaran, a certified zoologist and enthusiastic plant aficionado, provided an in-depth explanation of the various herbal and ornamental plants, their uses, benefits and the role they play in the eco-system.
“The objective is to promote and encourage living a greener lifestyle while being economical, practical and judicious with respect to available resources,” she said.
