The Nehru Institute of Technology in Kaliyapuram, near Thirumalayampalayam in Coimbatore, suspended 13 first-year BE and BTech students on Saturday for allegedly assaulting a senior student in the college hostel. The senior, who is studying MA Criminology, was accused of stealing money from the first-year students’ hostel room. A video of the assault went viral on social media on Sunday morning.
The injured student has been identified as Haathi, an MA Criminology student at Nehru College of Arts and Science. He was accused of stealing cash from the hostel rooms of first-year engineering students.
A group of 13 first-year students from different engineering branches allegedly confined Haathi in a hostel room and assaulted him. They also recorded a video of the incident.
In the 1.42-minute clip – which news18.com has not independently verified – the senior student is seen bare-chested, kneeling with his hands raised while a group of students surrounds him in what looks like a dormitory. He cries out in pain, saying his left-hand hurts badly. At one point, he loses balance and collapses, but the other students continue to insist.

The college management was informed about the incident, and Nehru College of Technology Principal Dr M Sivaraja suspended the 13 first-year BE and BTech students on Saturday. The private college stated that the incident was not a case of ragging. Both the injured student and the suspended students have been asked to appear before the college management on Monday for further investigation.
“The following students have violated the rules and regulations of the college by engaging in an act of misconduct within the hostel premises. Based on the preliminary inquiry conducted by the hostel committee, the following students are hereby suspended from both the college and hostel with immediate effect. They are required to bring their parents on March 24 at 9:00 AM. The students are strictly prohibited from entering the college and hostel premises until further notice,” reads the suspension order dated March 22.
