With the summer holidays currently in progress, uncertainty remains over whether schools across Tamil Nadu will reopen as scheduled on June 2, or if the date will be deferred due to the ongoing heatwave. Recent updates indicate that a postponement may be considered if extreme temperatures persist.

Public examinations for Class 12 were held from March 3 to 25, followed by Class 11 assessments from March 5 to 27. Class 10 examinations were conducted from March 28 to April 15. This year, 8,21,057 pupils appeared for the Class 12 public exams, while 8,23,261 took the Class 11 exams. Notably, 9,13,036 students sat for the Class 10 exams. The summer break officially commenced on March 26.

Results for the Class 12 exams have recently been declared, with the outcomes for Classes 10 and 11 expected to be announced shortly.

Earlier forecasts had indicated that Tamil Nadu would experience a prolonged heatwave through to June, prompting speculation regarding the reopening schedule. However, recent widespread rainfall has offered temporary relief, slightly easing the scorching conditions.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), while the intensity of the heatwave has reduced for now, temperatures are likely to rise again in the days ahead. Should the heatwave subside before the beginning of June, schools are expected to reopen on the scheduled date. However, any surge in extreme temperatures could necessitate a revision of these plans.

Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has confirmed that the decision regarding the reopening of schools will hinge on the prevailing weather conditions. He added that the final call will be taken after consultation with Chief Minister MK Stalin, and will prioritise the health and safety of students.

As the state awaits further developments in the weather, school authorities and parents remain on alert for the official announcement in the days to come.
