A first-year undergraduate student at Delhi University recently sparked a widespread discussion on social media by voicing her frustration over not landing any internship opportunities, despite her excellent high school performance and numerous accolades in college competitions.
Bisma Fareed, who is pursuing a BA in English Honours at Hansraj College and resides in Delhi with her parents, clarified that her viral post had been misunderstood. She never claimed to have a degree but instead highlighted her achievements in high school, intermediate, and college competitions. Despite these accomplishments, companies have consistently rejected her internship applications.
Bisma explained that many companies require candidates to have prior experience for internships, creating a catch-22 for first-year students like herself. She finds it frustrating that despite excelling in communication skills and participating in numerous debates, companies are unwilling to give her a chance.
The intention behind Bisma’s post was to inform students about the limitations of relying solely on academic achievements such as certificates, medals, or grades. She emphasized the importance of practical experience and hands-on work.
According to her, the education system is overly focused on marks, neglecting practical skills and real-world experience, which leaves students ill-prepared for life after school or college.
Bisma advocates for an education system that prioritizes practical work, enabling students to gain relevant experience during their studies. She believes that students should be able to demonstrate practical knowledge in their field of study to secure internships and jobs. Her disheartening experience of being repeatedly rejected from internships despite her academic success has led her to this conclusion.
In a message to her fellow classmates, Bisma stressed that students should focus on gaining practical experience early on. Practical work is what ultimately leads to internships and job opportunities, not just academic accolades, she added.
