Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of the toughest exams in India and remains a dream for many, but many have had success in clearing the exam with their sheer dedication and hard work. One of them is Amrit Jain who cleared the exam not once or twice but four times consecutively. Amrit Jain is now an IPS officer and is currently serving as an ASP (training) (Assistant Superintendent of Police) in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh.
He made his first serious attempt in 2017 but could get through Prelims with just 0.66 marks. From there, he poured all his hard work and efforts into UPSC 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. In 2018, he was on the reserve list and got Indian Defence Accounts Services (IDAS). Amrit in the following year secured AIR 321 and followed by 2020 and 2021 he got AIR 96 and AIR 179 respectively.
In a conversation with Indian Masterminds, Amrit said that he realised that his achievement is not very common as UPSC CSE is full of uncertainty. But while attempting for the exam, he didn’t see it that way and kept doing the same thing with a little improvement.

Amrit did his preparation from Jaipur and took no help from coaching. But when he missed Prelims with minimal margin he changed his strategy and started consulting multiple sources for the static portion. He also mentioned that UPSC CSE is continuously changing its pattern and for that one needs to be fully attentive and informed.
He also shared that he attempted 140 mock tests in the time limit of 1 to 1.5 hours. This gave him an edge during the exam as his speed helped him to read the questions and understand them at least three times.
Even though he cleared CSE four times with fairly good ranks, he still couldn’t get his IAS which was his aim. But he admittedly doesn’t regret it as working in IDAS gave him interesting opportunities to contribute to India’s defence and strategic sector.
