The Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination (UPSC CSE) is one of the toughest exams to crack. Many IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officers have left their coveted professions like doctors and engineers, and have pursued their careers towards civil services. One of them is IAS Madhav Bharadwaj, a resident of the serene town of Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. Madhav has completed his education at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in his hometown. Madhav had aspired to become an engineer.

After obtaining a BTech degree, Madhav did his MBA from IIM Ahmedabad and bagged a job as a product manager at Microsoft. It was during the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown, which led Madhav to resort to working from home. While he was working from home, Madhav had the idea of becoming an IAS officer. He decided to make a shift in his career and started preparing for UPSC CSE. He worked extremely hard; but on his first attempt, he couldn’t clear the exam by just three marks.

This first attempt came as a shocker to Madhav, but it didn’t let him feel low. Instead, he challenged himself to crack the exam in the next attempt. Speaking with a media portal, Madhav shared that he wasn’t expecting that he wouldn’t pass the exam. “It was my biggest shock. However, I wrote the prelims exam, which was scheduled for next week,” he added.

He cleared the prelims, mains and interview rounds in his second attempt. He secured an All India Rank of 536 in the UPSC Civil Examination 2022.

During the preparation days, Madhav used to work in the office the entire day and then studied for four to five hours at night. He also studied for 10 to 12 hours on his off days. On the last day of exams, he studied for 15-16 hours and his hard work paid off and fulfilled his dream of becoming an IAS.
