These institutes vary in the courses and degrees they offer, making it essential for students to choose based on their field of study. Here is a list of the top 10 IITs and their admission criteria to help you make an informed decision.

1. IIT Madras

IIT Madras is consistently ranked as the top engineering institute in India. It offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across various disciplines, including Engineering, Management, and Science. Admission to BTech, MTech, MSc, and BSc courses at IIT Madras is entirely based on entrance exams. Admission to most disciplines at IIT Madras is through national-level entrance tests such as JEE Main, JEE Advanced, IIT JAM, and GATE, among others. The fees for most courses range between Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.

2. IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi, one of India’s premier engineering institutes, offers a diverse range of programmes in Science, Engineering, and Design. Its flagship BTech programme, available in 14 specialisations, admits students based on JEE Advanced, followed by JoSAA counselling. For postgraduate programmes, MTech admissions are through GATE, MSc through IIT JAM, and MDes via CEED. The tuition fees for various courses range between Rs 3 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, depending on the programme and student category.

3. IIT Bombay

IIT Bombay offers admission to its BTech programme based on JEE Main, followed by JEE Advanced. The institute provides approximately 86 courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels across disciplines such as Technology, Science, and Management. In addition to degree programmes, IIT Bombay also offers short-term online certificate courses, including Object-Oriented Programming and Programming Basics. The tuition fees range between Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 20 lakh, depending on the course.

4. IIT Kanpur

Admission to all courses is determined by the scores obtained in entrance exams such as GATE, IIT JAM, CEED, and CAT. Aside from its flagship BTech courses, the institute offers BSc, BS, MTech, MSc, MDes, MBA, and a few Dual Degree programmes. The fee range can go up to Rs 8 lakh.

5. IIT Kharagpur

Admission to the institute’s flagship BTech programme is based on JEE Advanced scores. Candidates must first qualify JEE Main before appearing for JEE Advanced. Apart from its flagship programme, IIT Kharagpur offers BSc/BS, Integrated MTech, Integrated MSc, LLM, MBA, and Executive MBA, along with PhD programmes. Depending on the course, the fee structure ranges between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh.

6. IIT Roorkee

Students are selected through JEE and other national-level tests. IIT Roorkee offers UG and PG degrees in Engineering, Science, Architecture, Management, and Social Sciences. The institute has also introduced two new postgraduate programmes—a Master in Design (Industrial Design) and a Master in Innovation Management (MIM). The fees at this institute go up to Rs 10 lakh.

7. IIT Guwahati

Admissions are conducted through national-level entrance exams such as JEE, GATE, and others. The institute offers a diverse range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across disciplines like Engineering, Science, Architecture, and Pharmacy. The fee structure varies, with BTech courses costing up to Rs 8 lakh, while MSc programmes can go up to Rs 20 lakh.

8. IIT Hyderabad

Admissions are completely entrance-based, except for the MA programme. The institute considers JEE Main and JEE Advanced scores for BTech courses, while GATE scores are accepted for MTech admissions. The fee structure goes up to Rs 8 lakh.

9. IIT Varanasi

The institute operates under Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and awards degree programmes such as BTech, BTech-MTech (Dual Degree), BArch, BPharma, MTech, MPharma, MSc, and PhD. Admissions are strictly entrance-based, and the fees can go up to Rs 10 lakh, depending on the course chosen.

10. IIT Dhanbad

IIT Dhanbad offers various undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across multiple specialisations and is strictly entrance-based. To gain admission to any course at the institute, students must first register on the official website of the subject-specific exam and then on the official website of IIT Dhanbad. The fees range between Rs 3 lakh to Rs 8 lakh.
