UGC to bring out 1,500 more textbooks in local languages – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission aims to bring out over 1,500 more books in various Indian languages in the coming months. During the inaugural session of the second Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam, PM Modi launched 100 books in 12 Indian languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu and expressed hope that universities will be pivotal in developing high-quality textbooks and teaching-learning materials in Indian languages.

Elaborating on the efforts taken by the expert committee under the chairmanship of Nageswar Rao, vice-chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University, to promote Indian languages in higher education, UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar said: “Translation of books into Indian languages will help institutions develop high-quality material and increase access to higher education.” “A team of subject experts, academics and translators is also being formed across India to prepare textbooks in Indian languages,” he said
Comprehensive guidelines have been issued to all universities for translation of books to maintain the quality of the translation work.
