Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Monday underscored the urgent need to curb dropout rates and ensure timely enrollment of all children aged 6 to 10 years across the state.

Chairing a high-level review meeting at the Raj Bhavan in Lucknow with senior officials from the Basic Education and Women & Child Development departments, she directed a week-long special enrollment drive in every village to achieve full enrollment in primary education, as reported by news agency PTI.

“It is crucial to ensure every child in classes 1 to 5 is enrolled on time in every district,” she said, urging swift and effective steps to reduce school dropouts. She also instructed officials to collect district-wise data on enrollment and dropout rates and monitor progress closely.

The review included updates on government upper primary schools, Anganwadi enrollment campaigns, gender ratio trends, and policy measures to address early dropouts.

Governor Patel raised concern over the declining gender ratio, urging strict oversight of private hospital deliveries and mandatory sharing of birth data. She called for joint efforts by the Health, Women & Child Development, and Police departments to curb female foeticide and ensure holistic child development.

Anganwadi officials were directed to guarantee that all eligible children are enrolled and receive nutrition, health checkups, vaccines, and early learning. She also emphasized the need for regular inspections of Anganwadi centres.

Drawing from her recent district visits, she noted several ground-level issues that require immediate attention and recommended a comprehensive plan to improve institutional deliveries and reduce premature births.

“The falling number of girl children is alarming. Public awareness, robust health infrastructure, and decisive policy action are critical to reversing this trend,” Patel stressed.
