The final results of the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024 have been declared, and among the successful candidates is Abhinav Sharma from Meerut, who has achieved an impressive 130th rank. With his first preference listed as the Indian Police Service (IPS), Abhinav is now on course to realise a dream deeply rooted in personal inspiration and family legacy.
Inspired By The Uniform
Abhinav’s aspiration to join the police force was shaped by his father, Inspector Ramesh Chandra Sharma, who currently serves as the in-charge of the Delhi Gate police station in Meerut.
Ramesh Sharma began his career as a constable, cleared the sub-inspector examination, and rose through the ranks to become an inspector. It was his journey in uniform that left a lasting impact on Abhinav.
Academic Journey And Perseverance
A graduate of IIT Patna, Abhinav completed his B.Tech in Civil Engineering in 2020. Choosing public service over a private-sector job, he immediately began preparing for the civil services examination. The path was not easy; he failed to clear the preliminary stage in his first attempt in 2021. In 2022, he advanced to the interview round but was not selected. His third attempt in 2023 earned him a place in the Indian Postal Services.
Despite the success, Abhinav remained steadfast in his ambition to join the IPS. Taking a sabbatical, he prepared once again and this time, in his fourth attempt, he emerged successful with a top 150 rank.
A Dream Realised
Abhinav attributes his success to discipline, determination, and the unwavering support of his parents. He draws inspiration from Hindi literature, often quoting lines from Rashmirathi, a Hindi epic written in 1952, by the poet Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’, which instilled in him the value of persistence. His fondness for Madhushala, by poet and writer Harivansh Rai Bachchan, also reflects his literary leanings.
Inspector Ramesh Chandra Sharma is visibly emotional and proud of his son’s achievements. He recalls the many ways he tried to encourage Abhinav to prioritise education, even taking him on train journeys in both general and AC compartments to highlight the contrast between different paths in life. According to Inspector Sharma, Abhinav is so dedicated to his studies that he remains blissfully unaware of everyday matters, such as the price of potatoes and onions.
For Abhinav, the journey has been long and emotionally intense. “The greatest joy,” he says, “is being able to make my father proud.”
