UPSC CSE Prelims Result 2025: The prelims exam was held on May 25, 2025. Those who appeared for the exam are now awaiting for the result.

The Union Public Service Commission conducts the UPSC Civil Services Examination every year in May/June. This three-stage exam has been ranked third in the list of the world’s toughest exams. Every year, around 10 lakh candidates appear for the UPSC CSE prelims exam. A few thousand of them qualify for the UPSC Mains and those who clear it also reach the interview round. The UPSC has set a tough eligibility for the civil services exam.

UPSC Prelims Attempts Limit

The Union Public Service Commission has fixed the attempt limit for the UPSC examination. This eligibility is determined according to different categories.

General & EWS: 6 Attempts

OBC: 9 Attempts

SC/ST: Unlimited Attempts (Upto age limit)

General & OBC PwBD: 9 Attempts

SC/ST PwBD: Unlimited Attempts (Upto age limit)

An attempt is counted only when a candidate appears in at least one paper in the prelims exam. Just filling the application does not count as an attempt. If candidates appear in prelims, even if you are unable to qualify for UPSC Mains, it will be considered as an attempt.

UPSC Prelims Age Limit:

The age calculation for UPSC exam can be understood as follows according to 2025:

The age limit is calculated on the basis of August 1st. For his year, candidates should be within the following age limit as on August 1, 2025:

Minimum Age: 21 Years (For All Categories)

Maximum Age:

General & EWS: 32 years

OBC: 35 years (3 years relaxation)

SC/ST: 37 years (5 years relaxation)

General & OBC PwBD: 42 years (10 years relaxation)

SC/ST PwBD: 42 years (unlimited attempts, but age limit 42 years)

Ex-Servicemen: 37 years (5 years relaxation for General)

Domicile of Jammu & Kashmir (resident there between 1980-1989): 37 years (5 years relaxation)

In some cases (like OBC+Ex-Servicemen) candidate’s relaxation can be added. Example: OBC Ex-Serviceman can get 3 (OBC) + 5 (Ex-Servicemen) = 8 years relaxation i.e. maximum age 40 years.

To apply for IAS/IPS posts, it is mandatory for the candidate to be an Indian citizen. They must have a graduation degree from a recognised university. Final year students can also apply, but they will have to provide proof of passing the degree while applying for mains.
