Suraj Tiwari from Kaswa Kuravli in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district, achieved a significant milestone by clearing the prestigious Civil Services Examination. His success was not just an academic accomplishment but a testament to his unwavering determination and resilience. Despite a life-altering accident that resulted in severe physical disabilities, he overcame immense challenges to secure the 917th rank. His extraordinary achievement fills his family and entire town with pride, serving as a powerful example of perseverance and strength in the face of adversity.
A Life-Changing Tragedy
In January 2017, Suraj’s life changed drastically after a devastating train accident in Dadri, Ghaziabad. The incident led to the amputation of both his legs above the knees, his right hand below the elbow, and two fingers on his left hand. He endured four months of hospitalisation followed by three months of mandatory bed rest, battling immense physical agony and emotional distress. Despite these overwhelming hardships, he remained steadfast and refused to lose hope.
Rather than allowing his disability to define him, Suraj resolved to rebuild his life. Determined to continue his education, he completed his undergraduate studies and pursued a Master’s degree in Russian at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). During this time, he rekindled his ambition to serve the nation and set his sights on one of the most gruelling competitive exams—the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
UPSC Journey
Preparing for the UPSC exams is an uphill battle for any aspirant, but Suraj took on this challenge amid the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite his physical limitations, he relied on sheer willpower and relentless hard work, demonstrating that true strength lies in the mind, not just the body.
Suraj’s first attempt at the UPSC exams ended at the interview stage, but rather than being discouraged, he took it as a learning experience. He analysed his shortcomings, refined his preparation, and approached his second attempt with even greater dedication. This time, his persistence paid off, and he successfully cleared the exam, cementing his place among India’s future civil servants.
As reported by Jagran, during his UPSC interview, an officer suggested that Suraj, being part of a ‘special category’, might want to create policies for others facing similar challenges. In response, Suraj respectfully disagreed, asserting that he did not consider himself part of any special category and was just as capable as anyone else in performing any task.
