The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur will conduct the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced on May 18, 2025. To secure admission to the programmes offered by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), candidates are required to appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 of the JEE Advanced exam.

According to an official notice, the JEE Advanced 2025 will be conducted in two sessions. Paper 1 is scheduled from 9 AM to 12 PM, while Paper 2 will take place from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Both three-hour papers are mandatory for candidates. Additionally, a candidate can attempt the JEE Advanced exam a maximum of two times in consecutive years, with the test being held in a computer-based (CBT) format.

JEE Advanced 2025: Exam Pattern

JEE Advanced will be held in a computer-based (online) mode. The medium of the exam is English and Hindi. There are two papers in the JEE Advanced exam: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Students are required to appear for both papers. The question paper comprises three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

In JEE 2025, the optional question structure in Section B will be eliminated, and the exam pattern will return to its pre-pandemic state. There will be five numerical questions in Section B for each of the three topics (mathematics, chemistry, and physics) in the updated pattern, which will consist of 25 questions in total. The previously available flexibility will be removed as these numerical enquiries become required.

The exam will continue to be administered across three hours with a total of 75 questions. Four marks will be awarded for each right response, but one mark will be deducted for each wrong response.

JEE Advanced 2025 Chapter-wise Weightage

The JEE 2025 syllabus introduces notable changes in subject-wise weightage compared to previous years. The weightage for Chemistry and Physics has decreased from 25% to 22.5%, while Mathematics now carries the highest weight in Paper 1, increasing from 30% to 35%. These adjustments reflect a shift in focus, placing greater emphasis on Mathematics.

JEE Exam Pattern Before the Pandemic: Before the pandemic, the JEE exam followed a structured format comprising 90 questions across three subjects: Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics. Each subject had 30 questions divided into two sections—Section A and Section B. Section A consisted of 20 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), while Section B featured 10 numerical questions, all of which were mandatory.

The exam had a three-hour duration, awarding four marks for every correct answer and deducting one mark for incorrect responses. The total score for the exam was 360 marks. This format emphasised a strong understanding of both theoretical concepts and numerical problem-solving skills.

JEE Exam Pattern During the Pandemic: The JEE exam format underwent significant alterations in 2021 as a result of the NTA’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to mitigate the challenges resulting from the disruptions in the learning process, the exam structure was altered to incorporate optional questions in Section B.

Candidates were now allowed to select any five of the ten number questions in Section B, which had previously contained ten. With this modification, students would have more freedom to concentrate on the questions they were most comfortable answering.

Furthermore, there were still 90 questions in total, with 30 questions per subject split into Sections A and B. This flexibility was also reflected in the marking structure, which now awards four marks for each right response and penalises one mark for each wrong response.

This short-term modification allowed students to customise how they approached the test, especially in disciplines like physics and mathematics where solving numerical problems was frequently difficult. It was deemed a necessary adjustment because of the pandemic’s disruption of the school year.
