The SECMOL School (Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh) in Leh, Ladakh, serves as an outstanding example of a modern education system. The SECMOL school project started in 1988 when a group of college students from Ladakh, including Sonam Wangchuk, the renowned education reformer, initiated the project. Notably, Aamir Khan’s character Rancho in the film 3 Idiots draws inspiration from Sonam Wangchuk’s story.
SECMOL stands apart as an unconventional school. Unlike traditional institutions, it doesn’t adhere to a standard curriculum. Instead, students are immersed in a diverse range of subjects, from practical science and social issues to public speaking, gardening, animal and tree care, Ladakhi songs, dance, and cultural education.
At SECMOL, the primary focus isn’t on academic knowledge but rather on nurturing practical and social qualities and skills in students. The expansive 20-acre campus is entirely powered by solar energy and a unique aspect is that the students are responsible for managing the entire campus.
As per the details provided on the school’s website, SECMOL offers admission opportunities to students who may have failed or dropped out in the 10th grade or even those who have passed the 10th grade but have experienced a gap in their education. Proficiency in Ladakhi is a requirement for all applicants. Additionally, special consideration is given to candidates with disabilities, orphans, and children of single mothers, who receive special weightage in the admission process. The school also extends sponsorship support to students in need.
SECMOL operates on a unique model where no tuition fees are imposed for education. However, there is a monthly charge of Rs 2000 for food. In exchange for this, students receive not only food but also access to accommodation, education, and various other facilities at no additional cost. An integral part of the SECMOL experience is that students actively participate in the daily chores and responsibilities required to run the campus, fostering a sense of responsibility and self-sufficiency.
Situated in the Indus Valley, approximately 18 km from Leh and at an altitude of 3500m. This area experiences a cold desert climate with temperatures ranging from 20°C in summer to -30°C in winter. Fortunately, the region enjoys more than 300 sunny days annually, making solar energy a dependable resource.
